LEDUA, Filiti Leya; Ibe vakabati (Mat)
This ibe vakabati, woven by Filiti Leya Ledua, was made in Fiji for the Brisbane wedding of her young nephew, Sam Kabunameca. 'Samisoni Koroi' is Sam's full Fijian name. Customarily, the ibe vakabati would be used for both his wedding and as a shroud for his body after death. For important events, the ibe vakabati are laid on the ground for dignitaries to stand on. The mats are layered with barkcloth according to their rank, with the most precious on top. As in Samoan and Tongan culture, the mats are considered more valuable than the barkcloth.
