KAWANABE, Yuri; Orange cascade (neckpiece)
Yuri Kawanabe has said: 'Through the process of transforming a flat sheet of metal into a three-dimensional shape, a new form which evokes a certain sense of rhythm comes into being. Naturally the varied frames of my mind are reflected in this process. Working this way, I realise my own deep-rooted aesthetics. The pursuit of the beauty of transformation is part of Japanese tradition.'(1)
An ingenuity of form and the conscious referencing of Japanese culture (both in terms of the subtleties inherent in the art of paper folding and the transformative potential of paper into metal) combine eloquently in Kawanabe's work. Orange cascade (neckpiece) is an example of Kawanabe's larger scale anodised aluminium neckpieces.
