SITTHIKET, Vasan, Fight For Art!
With its closely framed upright fist and the pointed phrase ‘For Art’, this painting signals the driving forces behind Vasan Sitthiket’s practice: outspoken and unapologetic activism and a commitment to creating and supporting new voices through art. The work was created for demonstrations and an exhibition protesting the newly appointed Bangkok Governor’s suspension of plans for the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC). Sitthiket was instrumental in organising the events, for which demonstrators created some 4000 paintings, marching them four kilometres from the BACC site to the Governor’s residence, where they were displayed outside as a guerrilla exhibition. Spattered with mud and even marked by the footprints of a pigeon, this painting bears the traces of its direct insertion into the course of events.
