Takahiro Iwasaki’s Reflection Model (Perfect Bliss) is an intricate miniature version of the Phoenix Pavilion, part of Kyoto’s Byōdō-in temple complex. Featured on both the 10-yen coin and 10,000-yen note, the building is an iconic and yet everyday image in Japan. Using Japanese cypress, Iwasaki reproduces the building’s reflection in a pond as a physical object, suspended from the ceiling like a three-dimensional mirrored image, floating in space. This dreamlike doubling invites consideration both of the building’s architecture and its significance as a monument in contemporary culture.
