Travelling nobleman is one of Stillfried-Ratenicz's most well-known photographs from this time, not only for its structured lines and composition but also for its depiction of the sitter in chic attire, notably a Western-style hat and umbrella. These were the first items of Western-style clothing to be adopted during the Meiji period. An umbrella was viewed as being very fashionable and civilised. Western clothing was considered a luxury, so outfits were often acquired a few pieces at a time. This photograph acknowledges the hybrid cultural transformation that was occurring across all levels of society during the Meiji Restoration.
