SANJAYA, Tisna; Surga diatas Berlin (Heaven over Berlin)
In this etching Surga diatas Berlin (Heaven over Berlin) and a work of a similar period, Pesta pencuri (Thieve's carnival) (Acc. no. 1996.078), Tisna Sanjaya characteristically displays a forceful expressionism. Through theatre-like scenarios, he alludes to violence, victimisation, imprisonment and man's inhumanity. These prints reflect a European tradition, particularly Spanish master Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), but which, at the same time, may be veiled commentaries on injustice perceived in his own country.
