This vase is among several that Joe Furlonger produced in collaboration with master potter Errol Barnes between 1994 and 1995. During this time, Furlonger was an artist-in-residence at Moree, a rural town in mid-west New South Wales and the subject of this work.
Painted with a dark, calligraphic line over broad strokes of yellow and in-filled passages of opaque white, this restrained and spare vessel is traced with controlled, coiled gestures that mark the rows of trees dividing the vast, open spaces of agricultural clearings. The colour palette speaks of the strong golden glare of pasture.
