Something More #1 is one of a series of six photographs in which Moffatt references 1950s B-grade movies to address the complexities of race in Australia. In her intentionally ambiguous image, Moffatt plays the part of a young mixed-race woman who dreams of escape, watched over by a ‘trashy’ white woman and a possibly Aboriginal man – who may be her parents. Wearing an attractive red cheongsam, Moffatt further confuses stereotypes, adding another cultural element whose presence and significance remains unexplained. The intense colours and warm saturated tones create a theatrical if not claustrophobic effect and infuse the image with a sense of mystery and unease.
