HIROSHIGE, Ichiryusai; Ryogoku, hanabi
Hiroshige is considered one of the leading exponents of the ukiyo-e landscape view. Many of his prints take as their subject places of beauty in and around the capital, Edo (modern Tokyo). His last great series, One hundred famous views of Edo (which actually includes 118 views), was not only popular in Japan but also influential on European artists including Van Gogh and Whistler. This scene depicts fireworks over the Ryogoku Bridge on the Sumida River during an autumn festival.
