HUANG Yongyu; Lotus with birds
Huang Yongyu is renowned as one of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />China's most famous cultural figures, working across a broad range of practices from calligraphy, oil painting, watercolour, ink painting and woodcuts, to caricature, prose and poetry. Lotus with birds is typical of the subject matter and technique of his paintings, with its focus on the natural world and the use of bold lines and broad strokes. Through his expressive work, Huang builds upon these ancient techniques while taking them in his own innovative direction. Since the 1970s, Huang has been a highly prolific artist, specialising in rural subjects and inspired particularly by the environment around his hometown of Fenghuang. Much of his subject matter is drawn from this region, and the lotus is a strong feature of his work.
