KAUAGE, Mathias; Man daravim elikopta (Man flying a helicopter)
Born in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Miugu Village in the highlands of Simbu Province, Kauage migrated to Port Moresby in 1967 where he met Georgina Beier, a British-born artist, who encouraged him to make art. Kauage went on to become a pivotal and influential figure in the development of contemporary Papua New Guinean art, often depicting the use of new forms of transportation such as helicopters, aeroplanes and cars adorned with traditional geometric designs. Kauage's screenprints and paintings are an important record of Papua New Guinean contemporary life.
