UNKNOWN CABINETMAKER; Double-ended sofa
This sofa is an exceptional example of the Neo-Grec style, then the most advanced of the Regency-era styles, and is the earliest example of colonial furniture in the Queensland Art Gallery's Collection.
The distinctive roll-over padded arm, which is directly supported by the legs, first made its appearance in English design books such as George Smith's The Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterer's Guide, Drawing Book and Repository, which was published in 1826. This skilled and assured carving shows that the carver was utterly familiar with the style and may have trained in London.
