It was very influenced by the big yellow MIAMI HIGH sign, which of course is copied from the HOLLYWOOD sign. But the piece was also meant to maybe work as decor for a surf shop as well as an artwork. It was two metres high and the Queensland Art Gallery had just bought it. Before they got it I took it down to Surfers to photograph it 'in situ' as it were, as that is where I'd always imagined it. As I was photographing the piece I heard the voice of a Japanese tourist behind me. 'Ah Surf!' he exclaimed and gestured to his girlfriend to stand by to pose with the sculpture. He then took his place next to me to take a photograph. He obviously thought that the sculpture was a tourist prop of sorts, a photo opportunity with nothing to do with me. I must say I was extremely flattered, a huge success in my eyes.
