1855, Scotland – 1924, Perth
The earliest of John Campbell’s identified paintings is dated 1889, the first year of his sojourn in Brisbane. Like many of Australia’s itinerant artists, little is known of Campbell’s early years and training. In the late 1890s, most of eastern Australia was suffering an economic depression and around 1900 he moved to Western Australia, where expanding primary industries and gold mining opportunities ensured a more positive financial climate. Campbell established a significant career there and is best remembered for his images of Perth and its environs.
