Frank Sherrin was born in Woolloongabba in inner-city Brisbane and attended school in Brisbane and Ipswich. Showing an early interest in painting, but with no formal art training — apart from some lessons in watercolour technique from Vida Lahey — Sherrin spent his working life in the engineering section of the Postmaster General’s Department in Brisbane. He enjoyed a long and active involvement in Brisbane’s art community and was a foundation member of the Half Dozen Group of Artists. He was a member of the Royal Queensland Art Society and exhibited with them from 1920 until 1949. In 1953, Sherrin was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal for services to art in Queensland, and he was a trustee of the Queensland National Art Gallery from December 1951 until April 1959.
