UGIBARI, Sarah

Sarah Ugibari painted on nioge from 2009 with a focus on ancestral designs. Her mother was Maranabara of Koruwo village and her father was Suevini of Kiara village on the Managalasi Plateau. As a young woman, Sarah married an Ömie man of the Siorajé clan who share the same ancestral creation story of the first man and woman Mina and Suja, as well as many barkcloth designs. Ugibari was taught to paint and create sihoti'e taliobamë'e designs by her mother and grandmother. She is the foremost authority on traditional customary dress and taught younger members of her clan how to paint and sew Ömie designs.
