GRANT, W.G.
1876 - 1951

1876, Brisbane – 1951, Brisbane

William Gregory Grant was educated at Brisbane Grammar School, where he was taught art by James Cowan. An accountant by profession, Grant studied art in the evenings at Brisbane’s Central Technical College under R Godfrey Rivers. He began exhibiting with the Queensland Art Society in 1900, was elected a fellow of the Society in 1904, and became a committee member the same year. He was awarded the Society’s coronation medal and made a life member in 1937. Grant was actively engaged in the promotion of art in Queensland — in 1919, he became a member of the advisory committee to the art department of the Central Technical College; he was a trustee of the Queensland National Art Gallery from 1945 until his death; from 1923 to 1930, he was a member of the Queensland National Art Gallery’s Advisory Committee; and, from 1947, he was a member of the John Darnell Fine Arts Committee of the University of Queensland.
