GREENO, Lola
1946 - present
Palawa elder Lola Greeno’s practice includes installation, natural fibre basketry and sculptural pieces using black Tasmanian sea kelp. However, she is best known for her shell necklaces – an artform she learned from her own elders, including the painstaking cleaning and polishing processes that reveal the shells’ lustre. Traditionally, more than 20 shell varieties – including abalone, warrener and king maireener (rainbow kelp) shells – have been collected to create these adornments. Greeno creates traditional and experimental neck pieces that are celebrated for their unique patterns, sequences and exquisite composition. Greeno’s work represents her commitment to the art form, while drawing attention to the environmental changes threatening the fragile ecosystem of her home.
