Percy Stanhope Hobday’s initial lessons in art were from his father James Mayall Hobday, who had trained in England and exhibited with the Queensland Art Society (QAS). Hobday enrolled at the Brisbane Central Technical College from 1896, where he studied under R Godfrey Rivers. He exhibited with the QAS for 50 years from 1901, and served as president from 1928 to 1931. With his sister Augusta, Hobday conducted a commercial art studio in Brisbane, the Hobday Art Studio. The pair also conducted art classes at the Brisbane Polytechnic School for many years. Hobday died in Brisbane on 7 August 1951, and 16 years later, in 1967, the bequest of his wife Emily Florence Hobday provided for the establishment of the Hobday and Hingston Bursary at the Queensland Art Gallery. Percy Stanhope Hobday was known and admired as a landscape painter throughout his career.
