Waangk Awa’ is a ‘story place’ for artist Janet Koongotema’s Dilly Bag Dreaming. Waangk Awa’ is the traditional Country of the Wik-Mungkan people, who belong to the Winchanam Clan; Koongotema paints this place as a clear assertion of her tribal rights to that part of her Country. Considered ngench thayan (sacred) and with access restricted to only Traditional Owners, Koongotema’s intimate, celebratory depictions of sacred Country reflect what she describes as ‘a very colourful place’ where the waters shimmer in kaleidoscopic hues, welcoming great flocks of migratory birds.
