Pocari sweat is named after a Japanese health drink designed to rehydrate the body by replenishing electrolytes. Filmed poolside at a palm-fringed resort, this video reflects on the continuing influence of advertising stereotypes, which both fail to provide models for women of colour and also reduce the Pacific to an exotic playground for white Western consumers. Tawale reproduces such images as a self-portrait, endlessly pouring Pocari sweat into her open mouth in an attempt to quench her thirst.
