Destiny Deacon and Virginia Fraser have worked collaboratively on many art projects, and this video encapsulates the quirky and playful nature of their partnership. With a title suggesting afternoon entertainment, Matinee observes two people coming together, one black man and one white woman, to dance in a large, vacant room. At one point, Deacon unexpectedly enters the frame — first with her voice, then with her form — and her sudden appearance is met with overplayed emotions. The performances evoke a powerful energy that is mimicked by defiantly careless camera movement and framing.
