Lesieli Kato Kakala Tohi Tupou is a distinguished coconut-fibre weaver from the Tongan island of Tongatapu. Together with her students, Tupou has revitalised the historical mosikaka weaving practice, which uses fibres of the coconut husk to create exquisitely patterned baskets once reserved for royalty. The artist’s kato (bags/baskets) displayed here embody the painstakingly intricate detail and versatility of Mosikaka weaving techniques. Tupou’s works – along with her passion to train new weavers in the artform – represent important acts of honouring Tongan culture, its resilience and adaptability.
