Lesieli Kato Kakala Tohi Tupou is a distinguished weaver from the Tongan island of Tongatapu. With her students, Tupou has revitalised the historical Tongan mosikaka weaving practice, which uses coconut husk fibres to create exquisitely patterned baskets of a kind once reserved for royalty. The artist’s kato (bags or baskets) embody the painstakingly intricate detail and versatility of mosikaka weaving. Tupou’s work – along with her passion to train new weavers – represents important acts of honouring Tongan culture, resilience and adaptability.
