QAGOMA acknowledges the passing of celebrated Gunggandji artist, designer and cultural leader Simone Arnol (1975–2026). Born in Gimuy (Cairns) and connected to Djabuganydji and Yirrganydji Country, Simone’s profound connection to family, community and Country was central to her artistic practice. Guided by Elders and community, she worked across painting, photography, textiles and fashion, sharing powerful stories of history, resilience and identity.
Through deeply personal bodies of work, including the ‘Reflections in Yarrabah’ and ‘1899 Yarrabah Rules and Regulations’ photographic series, both 2023, Simone honoured the legacy of her ancestors, elevating their memory, experiences, and culture in dynamic visual form.
Angkamuthi/Yadhaykana artist and Artistic Director of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, Teho Ropeyarn, reflected:
She stayed true to her roots, her community and her culture in everything she created. Her generosity, strength and commitment to others will be remembered by all of us who had the privilege to work alongside her.
