Benita Clements is one of only a few Iltja Ntjarra (Hermannsburg) artists who adds figures into her landscapes. Clements is the granddaughter of artist Oscar Namatjira and great-granddaughter of renowned watercolourist Albert Namatjira. Her confident gaze in Self portrait is reinforced by the presence of her grandfather and great-grandfather in the background, depicted painting their country. In the imagined scene, Clements demonstrates the continuing visual traditions of her Elders and community. A similar acknowledgement is expressed in Vincent Namatjira's Albert and Vincent 2014, which is also displayed in this exhibition.
