Coast with fishermen 1891

Jenner has captured the quiet beginnings of the fisherman’s workday off the coast of England, likely the south coast near Portsmouth. The serenity of the morning is bathed in the delicate golden and pink glow of the sunrise behind the sea wall. Jenner shows his mastery of understanding light, reflecting it on the clouds and waves, giving a Turneresque effect to the scene. Seagulls circle and glide above the waves, while four fishermen row out to sea as others prepare their boats to launch off the shore.

Lower right, a fisherman uses a hand net to fish off the shore while another carries a set of oars to the waiting boats. Composed after Jenner had moved to his home in Taringa, he continued to paint English scenery with a romantic emphasis, many of which were sent back to England for sale.
