As an artist, curator and educator, Gary Carsley is concerned with exploring alternative histories and destabilising established narratives. From painting and drawing, his practice has diversified to include complex spatial environments realised using digitally immersive strategies. Carsley has travelled extensively to document parks and gardens that have been designed to reconstruct views from distant homelands. He reconstructs and recontextualises them in a palette of wood and stone textures and applies this digital imagery as substrates to walls and furniture. He terms these works ‘draguerreotypes’, playing off the early photographic process and the idea of drag, or the act of passing as something else. Mimicry is central to Carsley’s technique and subject matter, and his garden scenes symbolise the way European culture propagated itself in new settings. The viewer is invited to situate themselves within these scenes, with tables and chairs set up as interactive tableau.
