Born 1957 Brisbane, Australia
Lives and works in Sydney, Australia and Amsterdam, The Netherlands
As an artist, curator and educator, Gary Carsley is concerned with exploring alternative histories and destabilising established narratives. From painting and drawing, his practice has diversified to include complex spatial environments realised using digitally immersive strategies. Carsley has travelled extensively to document parks and gardens that have been designed to reconstruct views from distant homelands. He reconstructs and recontextualises them in a palette of wood and stone textures and applies this digital imagery as substrates to walls and furniture. He terms these works ‘draguerreotypes’, playing off the early photographic process and the idea of drag, or the act of passing as something else. Mimicry is central to Carsley’s technique and subject matter, and his garden scenes symbolise the way European culture propagated itself in new settings. The viewer is invited to situate themselves within these scenes, with tables and chairs set up as interactive tableau.

Gary Carsley has also worked with the QAGOMA Children's Art Centre to develop a project for APT9 Kids. Inspired by R Godfrey Rivers’s painting Under the jacaranda 1903, Gary Carsley has created a ‘secret garden’ for APT9 Kids that is bursting with the iconic purple blooms of the jacaranda tree. Through Purple Reign, children can engage with the artist’s ideas through an animated video and touchscreen activity, all within a vibrant setting that’s perfect for a selfie.
