Yoko Asakai’s ‘Passage’ series of eight photographs depict rural and outer-urban landscapes, shot along empty roads in Aomori Prefecture in the far north of Honshu, Japan’s main island. The focal points of the images are unusual LED road signs attached to aerovanes, measuring wind speed and direction in a region where heavy fogs and freezing breezes are a fact of life. Each work is titled according to its respective sign’s reading — Southwest wind 1m, South wind 0m and so on — with an image representing each of the eight major compass points. For this work, Asakai researched weather patterns, and then drove across the prefecture to locate and photograph each wind direction. The work is the product of the considerable labour, patience and time involved in locating and chasing the electronic report of a given wind — a visual record of an invisible natural force.
