ENDURING KNOWLEDGE
By Tarun Nagesh
'Rising Voices' September 2025
'Enduring knowledge' is the third thematic section in 'Rising Voices: Contemporary Art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific' (2026–27), a landmark collaboration between the V&A, London, and QAGOMA, Brisbane.
These artists respond to contemporary experiences using techniques and materials with long histories and deep cultural associations. Through evolving forms of South Asian miniature painting – a technique that continues to be studied in South Asia and beyond – one group of artists offer commentary on gender, violence and political tensions, whether reflecting local or more far-reaching perspectives.
The importance of collecting and working with local materials – in particular to make body adornment and performance objects connected to culture and place – is expressed through examples of jewellery-making practices with long histories. The ongoing importance of weaving is also explored whether by revisiting and reviving traditional techniques or by developing experimental new approaches.
